Pipeline Service

Geomagnetic disturbances, produced by active space weather periods, have two major effects on pipeline performance.

  1. Corruption of the cathodic protection survey data
  2. Reduction of the expected lifetime of the pipelines

A more detailed description of the geomagnetic effects on the pipelines can be found at Geomagnetic Hazards.

This service was developed in collaboration with Space Weather European Network (SWENET)

This service is available for the time period from 1991 to the present. The latest covered day is the last complete UT day. Forecasts of the geomagnetic activity can be found at Geomagnetic Forecasts.

The following information for the pipelines located in Canada is provided:

  1. Geomagnetic field variations at the geomagnetic observatory closest to the pipeline location
  2. Geo-electric (telluric) field variations, determined by converting the magnetic field data to the electric field using one-dimensional layered earth conductivity model
  3. Pipe-to-soil potential difference (PSP) variations for a sample pipeline, obtained by applying the distributed source transmission line model (DSTL) for simple pre-defined pipeline topologies with the geo-electric field as a driving source
  4. PSP variations for user-defined pipeline topologies are also available

These options can be found at the Pipeline Service Options page. This service at a present time is restricted to single pipelines only.
